What Is Expanded PTFE Sheet?

ePTFE sheet material combines the chemical inertness of standard PTFE with a unique microporous fibrillated structure that delivers superior sealing performance.

Expanded PTFE sheet material - ePTFE sheet roll

Expanded PTFE (ePTFE) is a microporous, highly compressible form of PTFE. It combines the outstanding chemical resistance of standard PTFE with a unique soft, flexible structure that conforms perfectly to irregular flange surfaces — sealing at very low bolt stress without creep or cold flow.

Unlike conventional PTFE gasket materials, ePTFE sheet does not require high bolt load to achieve a seal. Its fibrillated microstructure compresses to fill surface imperfections, gaps, and irregularities, creating a reliable, long-lasting seal even on damaged or worn flanges.

The material is particularly valued in chemical processing, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, and cryogenic applications where both chemical compatibility and temperature extremes must be handled reliably.

Why Expanded PTFE Sheet?

ePTFE sheet outperforms conventional gasket materials in the most demanding sealing applications.

✓ ePTFE Sheet

  • Seals at low bolt stress
  • Zero cold flow or creep under load
  • Conforms to damaged/worn flanges
  • No curing or bake-out needed
  • Instant seal on startup
  • Resists all common chemicals (pH 0–14)
  • Stores indefinitely without degradation
  • FDA-compliant grades available

Standard PTFE

  • Requires high bolt load
  • Prone to cold flow and creep
  • Poor recovery after compression
  • Needs re-torquing over time
  • Shorter service life in动态 applications
  • Good chemical resistance
  • Less conformable to surfaces
  • FDA grades available

Compressed Fiber / Aramid

  • Good pressure resistance
  • May degrade in strong chemicals
  • Temperature limited (~280°C max)
  • Requires careful bolt loading
  • Can corrode metal flanges
  • Shorter shelf life
  • Higher leakage risk on uneven surfaces
  • Not suitable for cryogenic use

Key Advantages

⚙️ Universal Chemical Resistance

Withstands virtually all chemicals across the full pH range (0–14) — including acids, alkalis, solvents, and oxidizers. Only molten alkali metals and elemental fluorine can affect it.

🧊 Wide Temperature Window

Rated from -260°C (cryogenic / LN2 environments) to +260°C continuous service. Suitable for liquid nitrogen, steam, thermal oil, and high-temperature chemical processes.

🔒 Zero Cold Flow / Creep

The expanded microporous structure eliminates cold flow and creep under bolt load. Seals maintain integrity indefinitely without re-torquing — unlike conventional PTFE gaskets that can squeeze out over time.

🏭 Instant Seal at Low Stress

The soft, conformable structure fills flange imperfections with minimal bolt load. This protects delicate equipment and reduces the risk of flange damage during assembly. No curing, no waiting — the seal is active from the moment the bolts are tightened.

🍽️ FDA-Compliant Grades Available

FDA 21 CFR 177.1550 compliant grades available for food, beverage, and pharmaceutical applications. USP Class VI testing on request.

📦 Long Shelf Life

Unlike organic gasket materials, ePTFE does not age, harden, or degrade in storage. Sheets can be kept indefinitely without loss of sealing performance.

Industry Applications

ePTFE sheet is specified by engineers and procurement teams across a wide range of industries.

🧪 Chemical Processing

Handles aggressive acids, alkalis, and organic solvents in tanks, reactors, heat exchangers, and piping systems. Compatible with virtually the entire periodic table of chemicals.

🍽️ Food & Beverage

FDA-compliant for food contact surfaces. Used in food-grade tanks, brewing systems, dairy processing, and beverage production where hygiene and chemical resistance both matter.

💊 Pharmaceutical

USP Class VI compliant grades for API manufacturing, sterile processing, and biotech applications. Clean, non-reactive sealing for critical process equipment.

⚙️ Pump & Valve

Reliable static seals for centrifugal pumps, diaphragm valves, and process valves. Conformable enough to seal on slightly worn or uneven faces without leakage.

💨 Steam Systems

Rated to +260°C and resistant to steam condensate. Used in steam traps, saturated steam lines, and high-temperature process steam systems.

❄️ Cryogenic Applications

Service rated to -260°C — suitable for LNG terminals, liquid nitrogen systems, and cryogenic storage and transfer equipment where many conventional gasket materials become brittle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from engineers and procurement teams about ePTFE sheet material.

Q: What is the difference between PTFE sheet and expanded PTFE (ePTFE) sheet?
Standard PTFE sheet is a dense, relatively rigid material that requires high bolt load to form a seal and is prone to cold flow (creep) under sustained pressure. Expanded PTFE (ePTFE) sheet has a microporous fibrillated structure — it is much softer, more compressible, and conforms to irregular surfaces at low bolt stress. ePTFE also recovers better after thermal cycling and does not creep or cold-flow under load.
Q: What temperature range can ePTFE sheet handle?
Our ePTFE sheet is rated for continuous service from -260°C to +260°C. This covers cryogenic applications (liquid nitrogen, LNG) at one end, and steam and thermal oil applications at the other. Peak temperature should not exceed +260°C for continuous service.
Q: Is ePTFE sheet suitable for food and pharmaceutical use?
Yes. FDA 21 CFR 177.1550 compliant grades are available. For pharmaceutical applications, USP Class VI testing can be provided on request. Contact us to specify the correct grade for your regulatory requirements.
Q: Can ePTFE sheet be used on damaged or worn flanges?
Yes — one of the primary advantages of ePTFE sheet is its ability to conform to irregular, warped, or slightly damaged flange surfaces. The material compresses to fill gaps and surface imperfections, achieving a reliable seal where rigid gasket materials would leak. For severely damaged flanges, consider ePTFE joint sealant tape as an alternative.
Q: Does ePTFE sheet have a shelf life? Does it degrade over time?
No. Unlike organic gasket materials (cork, fiber, rubber), ePTFE is chemically inert and does not age, harden, or degrade in storage. Sheets can be kept indefinitely without loss of sealing performance — making them ideal for spare parts inventory.
Q: What thicknesses do you offer? Can I get custom sizes?
Standard thicknesses range from 0.5mm to 7.0mm, all in 1520×1520mm (60″×60″) sheets. We also offer custom thicknesses, custom sheet sizes, and custom shapes (cut gaskets) on request. No minimum order quantity for custom cuts.
Q: What chemical environments should be avoided with ePTFE sheet?
ePTFE is attacked by molten alkali metals (sodium, potassium) and elemental fluorine at high temperature. For all other common industrial chemicals — acids, alkalis, solvents, oxidizers, water, steam — ePTFE provides excellent resistance across the full pH range of 0–14.
Q: Do I need to re-torque ePTFE sheet gaskets after installation?
No. Unlike conventional PTFE, ePTFE does not exhibit cold flow or creep under bolt load. Once the joint is assembled and torqued, the seal remains stable and does not require re-torquing. This is particularly valuable for inaccessible joints or buried pipework.
