| Forms | Skived rod, molded rod, bar stock |
| Certification | FDA-grade virgin available on request |
PTFE rod and bar are produced in unfilled virgin grade and a range of filled compounds that change wear, creep, and thermal behaviour. The grade selected is the main design decision that follows the application brief.
| Material | Composition | Key Properties | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Virgin PTFE | 100% PTFE, unfilled | Best chemical resistance; FDA 21 CFR 177.1550; USP Class VI on request; high purity | Food, pharma, lab |
| 15% Glass-filled | Virgin PTFE + 15% glass fibre | Higher wear resistance, lower creep, better dimensional stability under load | Bearings, bushings, support rings |
| 25% Glass-filled | Virgin PTFE + 25% glass fibre | Even higher wear resistance and stiffness, slightly reduced chemical resistance | Heavy-load bushings, valve seats |
| 25% Carbon-filled | Virgin PTFE + 25% carbon | Excellent thermal conductivity, low creep, electrically conductive | Seals in dynamic service |
| 15% Graphite-filled | Virgin PTFE + 15% graphite | Low friction, improved wear under load | Hydraulic seals |
| Bronze-filled | Virgin PTFE + 40-60% bronze | Very high compressive strength, good thermal conductivity | Heavy-duty bearing surfaces |
| Carbon + Graphite | Combined fillers | Highest wear resistance, low friction | Rotary seals, compressor rings |
PTFE rods are stocked in diameters from 6 mm to 300 mm. Standard production length is 1000 mm; 300 mm and 2000 mm lengths are available on request.
Standard diameter tolerance for stocked rod:
Cut-to-length service is provided for every diameter; standard length tolerance ±1 mm. End-facing and light centre-drilling are available when the part will be machined further. For a complete machining review and tolerance guidance, see our PTFE CNC machined parts page.
For most chemical, food, pharmaceutical, electrical, and laboratory service, virgin (unfilled) PTFE rod is the default choice. It carries FDA 21 CFR 177.1550 compliance for food contact and USP Class VI biocompatibility for laboratory surfaces. Its well-known drawbacks are relatively high cold flow under load, moderate wear rate in dynamic service, and poor thermal conductivity.
A filled compound is selected when the application involves any of the following:
If you are unsure, share the application brief (temperature, pressure, media, load, motion type) and we will recommend the grade. For a deeper comparison of virgin vs filled grades, see our virgin vs filled PTFE guide.
PTFE is a soft, low-modulus material with a high coefficient of thermal expansion, so it behaves differently from metals on the machine. Standard practice from our shop:

PTFE rod and bar feed into machined parts that we ship into:
Valve seats, lined pipe fittings, custom gaskets, instrument housing.
Stirrer bearings, sample holders, instrument components.
Fluid handling, manifold components, gas-line fittings.
Hygienic bearings, scraper blades, conveyor components.
Downhole instrument components, seal assemblies, back-up rings.
Material selection and machining guides
A: Standard diameters range from 6mm to 200mm, with lengths from 100mm to 1000mm. Custom sizes available upon request.
A: Virgin PTFE is pure polytetrafluoroethylene with maximum chemical resistance. Filled PTFE contains additives like glass fiber, carbon, or graphite to improve mechanical strength, wear resistance, or thermal conductivity for specific applications.
A: Yes, virgin PTFE rods meet FDA and USP Class VI requirements and are suitable for food processing, beverage, and pharmaceutical applications.
A: Tolerances up to ±0.01mm are achievable with CNC machining of PTFE rod stock.
